‘Nurture’
An exhibition by East Anglian based Design Nation members.
Â
Nurture (verb); care for and protect (someone or something) while they are growing.
Â
Design Nation is the leading membership portfolio for contemporary craft and design in the UK. Their East Anglian group hub was formed in 2020, and connects makers working from their studios in Suffolk, Essex and Norfolk. Having met frequently over Zoom for the past six years, eight members have come together to exhibit their work. ‘Nurture’ encapsulates an exploration of each maker’s connections with either their local environment, personal well being or perceptions of identity.
Â
Artists work across disciplines including weave, embroidery, ceramics, kiln formed glass, mixed media and textile art. The link between each maker’s practice centres around being increasingly environmentally aware.
Â
Makers draw upon a variety of influences and experiences, from walking and connecting with their local environment, to explorations of value, balance and natural processes. The theme of Nurture is interpreted in different ways - some makers have applied personal experience of the act of making and its benefits on their wellbeing, while others have chosen to explore the idea of nurture through repurposed and eco friendly materials.

Read on below to find out more about the work I'm creating for this exhibition...

For this exhibition ‘Nurture’— I have created a series of new textile artworks that explore the nurturing process of craft itself and how this in turn nurtures one’s wellbeing. Following a recent health diagnosis and throughout treatment I have found a sense of balance and emotional regulation through the making of these hand-crafted works channelling my intuitive use of materials, pattern, placement, stitch and colour.Â
My approach to this collection was inspired by the Japanese philosophy of ‘Ma’, which represents the importance of negative space— a pause or space between two objects or moments in time that, in turn, evokes a feeling of balance. This philosophy is an integral part of my work as a textile artist.Â
